30 Days of Books Challenge

Day 09, 10 August 2011 – A book you thought you wouldn’t like but ended up loving

There are a lot of my books that I thought I wouldn't appreciate but they ended up among my favorites. Most prominent examples are the Vorkosigan Saga (Miles didn't appeal to me at first, but once I browsed a book, Lois McMaster Bujold had me hooked.); Amelia Peabody (Victorian England, prissy heroine, boooring. But Elizabeth Peters writes beautifully, and I went down for the count as if I'd been smacked on the head by Amelia's signature parasol.); and the Young Wizards series (Young wizards again? Oh, they're American. So?  Opened the book to the Wizard's Oath and boom! Goner!).

Special mention goes to Revolt in 2100 by Robert A. Heinlein. Thin, thin paperback with weird cover moldering at P15 (about USD0.35) on the discount books shelf at the department store I passed through on the way to school. I'd seen it there for a long time before I relented because of the price and included it with some other books I'd bought. Didn't know I'd end up carting it around with me and even quoting from it.
