Fine. Ashes in the Wind by Kathleen Woodiwiss. At least it can now be considered a classic, and by the mother of modern historical romance herself. I just love the character of Alaina MacGaren, whose resemblance to a much-loved fictional heroine is obvious. Close runner-ups are Shanna and So Worthy My Love by the same author. Fine. I admit to having her complete oeuvre. :D
