I had a hankering for a Lois McMaster Bujold over the weekend and so started rereading one of my favorites. I took the book with me out to lunch, intending to stop by an internet cafe before heading to Divisoria to browse the assorted goodies (and not so goodies) there. Then I used the book as a mouse pad at the internet cafe because the mouse kept sticking. Then I headed to Divisoria and forgot all about it. I only remembered the book when I had gotten home at around 9:00 p.m. with a take-out dinner, and rummaged in my bag for it, intending to savor both at the same time. Horrors. Fortunately, the internet cafe is a favorite of mine and is open 24 hours, so I put my going-out clothes back on and ran out. Then the boy at the counter said he hadn't noticed the book and no one had called his attention to it. More horrors. I decided to poke around though, and found the book at another table, being held by an urchin that had evidently decided to appropriate it. Good thing I looked for it when I did, so I got it back... it was hard enough finding a copy in the bookstore in the first place and I knew it would be hard to replace! After that, I decided the book deserved to be the source of today's teaser(s).

Lois McMaster Bujold's books kind of grow on you. The protagonist is quite unusual (insert dot dot dot here), to say the least, and I'd been reading Elizabeth Moon at the time the Bujold books were recommended to me. They kind of grew on me though, with the writing, and the desire to know what happens next. The book that gives today's teasers (can't resist, there are so many good passages) is really kind of the sappiest of the bunch, because it's the most romantic one, but it also is my favorite. Don't get it wrong, the Vorkosigan Saga is spec-fic and most of it is space opera. It's just that in this book, everyone turns their thoughts towards love, even in the midst of galactic intrigue and politics and all that stuff. LOL.

So today's teaser is from "A Civil Campaign" by Lois McMaster Bujold.

"I love you. But I lust after and covet so much more than your body. I wanted to possess the power of your eyes, the way they see form and beauty that isn't even there yet and draw it up out of nothing into the solid world. I wanted to own the honor of your heart, unbowed in the vilest horrors of those bleak hours on Komarr. I wanted your courage and your will, your caution and serenity. I wanted, I suppose, your soul, and that was too much to want."
-p. 282, "A Civil Campaign" from the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold.

"There is no more hollow feeling than to stand with your honor shattered at your feet while soaring public reputation wraps you in rewards. That's soul-destroying. The other way around is merely very, very irritating."
-p. 387,
"A Civil Campaign" from the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

    Great teasers! I enjoyed Cordelia's Honor and Barryar, but I haven't made it to the rest of the Vorkosigan books yet. They are definitely on my TBR list though. :) My teaser is from Chasing Brooklyn this week.

    Hello all. It's been a while since I last answered comments on my Tuesday Teasers. I'm just sneaking this in on my lunch hour. XD Thanks for the comments!

    pussreboots: I wasn't really interested in Bujold's books at first, despite the reviews of them I read online. I think it was Komarr that really got me. Then I went back and re-read the others I had. XD

    Marg: Ooh, that's new to me. I better look for those books too. Thanks for the tip!

    Violet: Cordelia's Honor is also Shards of Honor, isn't it? XD I don't have Barrayar yet, I'm still looking for that one. I'm not reading them in order, just in the order in which I find and buy them.

    celi.a, Jan von Harz, Alayne, Audrey, Book Sake, gautami tripathy: Bujold really does have a way with words, doesn't she? XD Thanks!
