Eeek. I am a bit late with today's teaser. I forgot to put a book in my bag before I left for the office this morning and thus had nothing to get a teaser from during lunch break. No matter, it's not midnight yet. :P

Another author I've grown to like a lot lately is Earlene Fowler, whose Benni Harper books are named for quilt patterns. I have to admit it was the crafts angle that first hooked me --I love mysteries that have to do with arts and crafts-- then the characters themselves drew me in. Benni, her irascible Gramma Dove, her (second) husband Gabe Ortiz, her best friend Elvia and her favorite cousin Emory and... but wait, you have to discover them for yourself when you read the books. One thing I like about today's particular book, aside from a surprising twist at the end, is that Benni meets her favorite author of young adult mysteries, someone who wrote a series much like my favorite Trixie Belden, and that she loved the books because they were set in her hometown, much like I want to do with what I write.

So, today's teaser is taken from an Earlene Fowler book named for a quilt pattern which, I quote, "is traditionally constructed of small squares of fabric arranged by color and turned on point to form alternating rows of light and dark rectangles." Furthermore, it is supposed to symbolize the fact that "human life itself is touched by both sunshine and shadow, the physical and the spiritual, and that these elements often intersect."

"I held it up to the bright overhead light, trying to make out what was inside. Paranoid, maybe, but after the incident of my truck and this morning's threatening call, I was suspicious of everything."

-p. 139, "Sunshine and Shadow" by Earlene Fowler

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
