First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros is being hosted by Bibliophile By The Sea-- as it says, you pick a book and post the opening paragraph and see if other people would like to read the book based on its opener.

One of my favorite authors is Elizabeth Peters / Barbara Michaels-- yes, she writes under more than one name. She's one of the very few authors whose works I automatically buy whenever I come across a title I don't have yet, because I know it will be a good, fun read.

Would you like to read this book?

Legend in Green Velvet / Elizabeth Peters
1976, Fawcett Crest

The gravestones were black.

Jetty crosses, ebon urns and tablets, sable angels folding sable wings over somber stones. . . A Devil's graveyard, a cemetery of Satanists.

In actual fact, Susan did not find the sight at all sinister. In the mellow summer sunshine, nestled cozily among emerald grass, the black stones had a certain bizarre charm. As Susan looked down on the cemetery she felt not a single premonitory shiver. Which only goes to prove that premonitions, like history, are more or less bunk.
