It occurs to me that although a substantial part of my personal library is made up of spec-fic books, I have not been using them for teasers in that same proportion. Maybe because when Tuesday rolls around, I am kind of more in the mood for mysteries than for speculative fiction?

Well, anyway, this Tuesday caught me reading a sci-fi book, although the best description would be "space opera." The funny part is, since Star Wars and Star Trek and all those lovely space adventures became popular, many women have been writing space opera, not the least of them the author of the book from whence this teaser is taken.

I guess only someone familiar with these authors (or who has a fast hand with Google) could answer the question I always love to pose in connection with these books: What do Vanguard and Prideth have in common?

While those interested in such matters mull over that, let me just say that I once hated the name Kylara because of certain negative associations, but now it ranks among my favorite names, along with Esmaya (but that's another story). So without further ado, here's Kylara Vatta in Victory Conditions, the culminating Vatta's War book by Elizabeth Moon. Once I've finished collecting all her space operas, I'll go read the books she's more known for, the Paksenarrion books, and look for the common threads running through all of them.

Ky pulled out her Rossi-Smith and laid it on the table in front of her. Utter stillness in the room; eyes shifted from her to Merced and back.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

    Oh, I haven't read the Paksenarrion books since college, but loved them enough I've never parted with my copies. I am less familiar with Moon's sci-fi but I really enjoyed her Planet Pirate series and The Speed of Dark. Hmmm ... will have to go see what my library has from Vatta's War, I guess!

    I do like that series. I also like the Serrano books. I have to say that I like them better than her Paksenarian books but I prefer space opera to fantasy. I also think she has grown as a writer since Paks. My teaser is from Blood Song by Cat Adams.

    Thanks for stopping by, ladies :) I've read all your teasers and enjoyed them immensely. It's lovely to find so many people who've also read Elizabeth Moon... and some who haven't, so I'm glad I've introduced this author to them.

    And congratulations on your new book, Emma!
