I'm laaaaaaate. I went home (an hour and a half by plane) to vote last Monday, and found out my broadband internet signal at the family home was rise-and-drop, making it next to impossible to post anything. But it's still Tuesday somewhere, right? I'll make this quick.
A word of caution before my compatriots and countrymen hang me: the book from which this is taken is a speculative fiction anthology. Fiction. Although some might argue that fiction or not, it would ring true.
My teaser this week is from the anthology Visions of Liberty, edited by Mark Tier and Martin H. Greenberg. More specifically, it's from the story "Renegade" by Mark Tier.
"'You have to understand that in the Philippines most everything is the opposite to what you're used to. For example, in America, you have law but no government; here we have government but no law.'
'Maybe it's jetlag, but I don't get it.'
'The system here works on grease. Bribery and corruption. Of course there are laws--the government makes new ones every day. But whether they're enforced, or how, depends on who pays what to whom. Going to court here is like going to an auction.'"
-p. 246-247, "Renegade" by Mark Tier, from the anthology Visions of Liberty, edited by Mark Tier and Martin H. Greenberg
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
* Grab your current read
* Open to a random page
* Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
* BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
* Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
That's great. I'm definitely going to look that one up. I think I get more recommendations for things along my taste from your blog than from anyone else on Teaser Tuesday.
I'm definitely going to try to make it to the Philippines sometimes soon when I have a long weekend from my job here in Korea.
