I've loved Dorothy Cannell's books from the first time I read "The Widows' Club". They're so tongue-in-cheek outrageous they're funny as hell. Ellie Simons Haskell is, after all, living our fantasy: fat spinster, the family ugly duckling, meets gorgeous guy, ends up pretending to be engaged to him so she can get her inheritance and thumb her nose at all her greedy relatives. However, she slims down and gorgeous guy falls in love with her for real, they get the inheritance and live happily ever after in a real castle... not quite. There are all these madcap adventures they end up having.

Ellie, it seems, thinks she's gotten rid of the hangups that came with her chub, but sometimes they come back when she doubts her husband. And what time in her life would be more prone to reviving her old neuroses than getting pregnant with their first child?


I was happy to find "Mum's The Word" by Dorothy Cannell in my favorite second-hand bookstore the other day, and here's a teaser for you this week:
